Agricultural education: INFONET BioVision

16-smallInfonet-BioVision is a database-driven on-line information platform tailored to the rural population in East Africa. It offers information on sustainable agriculture and ecological control of plant-, human- and animal- targeting pests and disease vectors. It also provides information on simple and environmentally safe technologies and approaches to improve the life and generate income while at the same time protecting the environment and the natural resources. Infonet-BioVision’s aim is to contribute to poverty reduction and environmental protection by disseminating appropriate methods for crop and livestock production, human and environmental health.

INFONET-BioVision is being carried out by the Swiss BioVision foundation for environment and development.

Pest and soil management, water treatment, livestock farming – all these areas require specific competences, skills and continuing training. Therefore a lot of small scale farmers in African communities unite in farmer networks to discuss similar challenges they meet, problems they share and explore ways to jointly address them. ICT-based information and training solutions can play a supportive role in these learning networks: examples like www.infonet-biovision.org show how database-driven on-line information systems can facilitate gathering, updating and editing of media rich information material tailored to meet the needs of various target groups.
